Sunday’s high winds and snow knocked out power to many parts of Red Deer.

Most of the outages in neighbourhoods such as Clearview were brief.

But at about 9 a.m., city crews were dealing with a tree that was downed by the wind onto lines near the Kerry Wood Nature Centre. In a Tweet, city crew requested the public’s patience as might take up to four hours to restore this power. Power to the centre was back up by 1 p.m.

Other electric outages were harder to pinpoint.

“We are aware of power outages affecting parts of the city. The cause is not known but crews are working to investigate and restore power as quickly as possible,” stated another Tweet from the city.

Two of the power outages were in the Edgar Industrial Area.

By 11:30 a.m. power had been restored to the majority of Edgar, with a couple of exceptions. The problem on Edgar Industrial Crescent will require a pole replacement. Power to this crescent was expected to be out until about 6 p.m.

Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning for southern Alberta, predicting heavy snowfall of 10 to 20 cm in the Red Deer area on Sunday, with periods of low visibility that would impact road safety.

Snow flurries continued to about 4 p.m. in Red Deer, with temperatures hovering near zero.

Ponoka RCMP Highway Patrol reported poor driving conditions on Hwy 2, with low visibility and icy pavement, recommending that motorists stay off the highway.
