Hockey fans can help keep toes toasty this winter at Sockey Day in Red Deer when the Red Deer Rebels take on the Medicine Hat Tigers on Family Day.
The United Way Central Alberta event has not been held since 2019 because of the pandemic, and the goal this year is to collect 2,000 pairs of socks that will be distributed to local agencies to help people in need.
“We had a great opportunity with the Rebels to partner during their Family Day game. It’s an afternoon game so we hope to have a lot of families and kids come out,” said United Way CEO Chelsea O’Donoghue.
The Feb. 20 game starts at 2 p.m. at Peavey Mart Centrium. Tickets are available at reddeerrebels.com/tickets.

Socks will be distributed to game attendees, or they can bring a brand new pair of socks. During the second intermission, people will toss the socks onto the ice where they will be collected.
Sock drops are being set up at local businesses where people can donate socks for the toss. Socks can be for either children or adults. So far sock drop locations will be at 360 Fitness, Beyond Insurance, Stride Physio, Family First Chiro, and Blackfalds Chiro.
Sockey Day in Red Deer helps raise awareness about community needs while providing socks for central Albertans.
Through the years socks have been distributed to agencies like Safe Harbour Society, Turning Point, Canadian Mental Health Association, The Outreach Centre, John Howard Society, Care for Newcomers and Mustard Seed.
“Socks are something that are always needed, especially mid-winter. We’re excited to do it again,” O’Donoghue said.
In the past, the event has been held in the fall at an evening game.
