Skating surfaces at Bower Ponds and Westlake will be ready for public use Saturday, but outdoor rinks and Anders’ skating surface will need a little more time.

Warm weather and a lack of snow caused a delay for us this year for our outdoor rinks, the City of Red Deer explained Friday.

“Crews are hoping the weather co-operates so we can open these amenities soon. When these are ready to open, the lights will be turned on, the nets will be put in place, and the community will be notified,” the city said in a release.

Skaters are reminded that helmet use is recommended at all times and hockey is not permitted at Bower Ponds or the ice skating oval at Setters Place at Great Chief Park.

At Bower Ponds, outdoor washrooms are available to the public daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and are found on the south side of the Bower Ponds Pavilion. The Pavilion will be officially launching its winter season on Dec. 18, offering skate rentals, concession, indoor skate changing and warming.

Setters Place at Great Chief Park open next Friday. Available skating times can be seen on the city’s website. Indoor heated change rooms and washrooms are available at this location. Admission fees are required to access the ice oval at Setters Place.
