Spike belt deployed to stop stolen pickup in central Alberta

A 20-year-old Red Deer woman was charged after RCMP used a spike belt in Ponoka to stop a stolen vehicle on Wednesday evening.

RCMP say at about 7:06 p.m. the Red Deer RCMP Crime Reduction Team were conducting patrols when they observed a stolen Chevrolet Colorado.

The driver lost control of the pickup truck in Ponoka when police used a tire deflation device. The suspect then fled on foot and was located nearby and arrested with the assistance of RCMP Police Dog Service.

The suspect was remanded into custody and charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, obstructing a peace officer, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, and additional offences under the Traffic Safety Act.
