CALGARY — A man wanted on a Canada-wide warrant has been arrested after a police chase that began in Calgary and ended about 90 kilometres north of the city.
The chase started late Wednesday evening when the driver of an allegedly stolen vehicle sped away from city police in a south-end neighbourhood and later reached reached speeds of 160 km/h.
Police quickly ended their pursuit but called in their helicopter to keep tracking the fleeing suspect.
Investigators say at one point the vehicle was driven the wrong way on Calgary's busy Stoney Trail, endangering the lives of oncoming motorists, but there were no reports of injuries.
The driver later dumped the vehicle, stole another one and headed north, but even a spike belt laid down by the RCMP at Airdrie could not stop him from continuing to roll on damaged tires.
The suspect, whose identity was not immediately released, reached the Didsbury area before Mounties managed to pull him over and take him into custody on several charges. (CHQR)
