Sports will be immortalized by art in Red Deer’s Canada Games Celebration Square.

Local artists are being invited to submit proposals for a $25,000 artwork that “highlights the athletic excellence, community spirit and the significance of the 2019 Games in Red Deer.”

Whether it’s a sculpture, painting, wall or ground mural, it will be a focal point in the public gathering space that’s being created in front of the Old Central Elementary School, said Taylor Venuti, co-ordinator of legacy and sustainability for the 2019 Games.

“We left it completely open on purpose, so it’s up to the artist’s interpretation,” she added. The competition is open to all artists in the province. The artwork must be ready for installation in the square by Dec. 31.

The 2019 Canada Winter Games Host Society is looking for a commemorative outdoor piece that has a “physical, permanent and artistic theme that represents the hosting of the 2019 Games.” It will remain in the community as a legacy long after the 2019 Games have concluded.

The proposal should align with, but not be limited the event’s vision and mission statements, said Venuti. These are listed on the website. Artists can also download the procurement package from canadagames.ca/2019/. The deadline for submissions is April 3.

The 2019 Canada Winter Games will run from Feb. 15 until March 3 2019 in Red Deer. Nineteen sports and a major cultural festival will be featured. The city will welcome up to 3,600 athletes, managers and coaches and more than 20,000 visitors.

The event will be the largest event ever hosted in Red Deer, and one of the largest in Alberta since the 1988 Calgary Olympics.
