Starbucks is returning to Clearview Market, near the roundabout at 67th Street and 30th Avenue.
Tyler Hansen, senior development manager with Melcor Developments Ltd., confirmed construction of the cafe is underway. Work will continue through the winter and the anticipated opening is early next spring.
The neighbourhood lost its Starbucks in early 2021 when Starbucks announced a plan to close up to 300 locations in Canada in response to changes in consumer behaviour during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“They made a decision to focus on drive-thru locations and expand their ability to offer delivery and curbside pickup. Unfortunately, the prior location in Clearview Market could not accommodate Starbucks in this transition,” Hansen said in a statement.
Clearview’s commercial area was built to be more pedestrian friendly and Starbucks was located in a strip mall without a drive-thru. Since then A&W has moved into the area and has a drive-thru. McDonald’s and Tim Hortons, which have been operating for years, also have drive-thrus.
There are also two car washes, a tire shop and two gas stations.
Hansen said Melcor maintained contact with Starbucks and worked together to develop a site with curbside pickup and a drive-thru.
“We are very excited to welcome them back after a short absence and I expect the community will also be happy to see them back in the neighbourhood,” Hansen said.
The new Clearview Starbucks is a stand-alone coffee shop and is under construction next to Mint Car Wash.
Red Deer has seven Starbucks, with the newest one located near the corner of Bennett Street and Gaetz Avenue Service Road, across from Bower Place shopping Centre.
