A Bluffton-area woman with life-threatening injuries was flown by STARS to an Edmonton hospital Tuesday after her SUV collided with a tractor trailer near Sylvan Lake.

RCMP said the accident happened about 12:35 p.m. on Hwy 20, about six km north of Sylvan Lake.

An RCMP collision analyst investigated the accident and it is believed that the 52-year-old driver of the SUV was heading southbound when her vehicle drifted towards the ditch. She over-corrected and swerved into the northbound lane colliding with an oncoming truck.

“The force of the collision tore the front wheels from the tractor trailer unit and both vehicles came to rest in the west ditch,” says Sylvan Lake RCMP Cpl. Mike Callihoo in a news release.

Photos released by police show the SUV suffered massive damage to its front end. The truck jack-knifed and the cab came to rest deep in the snowy ditch.

The badly injured woman was taken to hospital by air ambulance. The driver of the truck was not injured in the collision.

Sylvan Lake Ambulance and Sylvan Lake Fire Department also responded to the accident..
