A 23-year-old man will appear in Stettler provincial court Wednesday after a lengthy standoff with RCMP.

Stettler RCMP say they attempted to stop a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on Secondary Highway 601, near Pheasantback golf course, Friday evening.

The vehicle began travelling at excessive speeds and failed to stop for police.

Police say they knew the identity of the driver, and lone occupant of the vehicle, and decided not to give chase due to the risk to the public.

Police visited the man’s residence where he brandished a shotgun. He was taken into custody without incident after a 10-hour standoff.

Richard George is charged with flight from police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and possession of methamphetamine, among other offences.
