Elementary student choirs from Red Deer Public Schools and around Central Alberta will hit the stage with the Red Deer Symphony for Choir Kids on April 22 and May 6.
At the event, originally developed by Red Deer Symphony’s music director Claude Lapalme, the symphony accompanies the choirs.
Kati Ramsden, music teacher at Don Campbell Elementary School, has provided the school’s choir music to Lapalme who will arrange it for the symphony to play.
“It’s really unique. There are no other schools or symphonies that we know of that put something like this on. This is such a unique opportunity for our students to have the symphony playing their music. They are excited,” Ramsden said in a statement.
Preparations for Choir Kids started right after Christmas. Red Deer Public Schools and school divisions in the surrounding area are participating.
“Most of these students and their families haven’t really been exposed to this type of music or these types of events. It’s been neat to connect with the music teachers around the division and surrounding area as well,” the teacher said.
She said Red Deer is lucky to have a symphony orchestra and the partnership is good for both students and the RDSO.
“(The RDSO) get to reach out to people who normally wouldn’t come to a concert. It’s a great community outreach event.”
Choir Kids will be held at Gaetz United Church, located at 4758 50 St. Tickets can be purchased online at rdso.ca.
