For more than six weeks some general surgery patients have been diverted from Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre.

Alberta Health Services said patients continue to be diverted at this time, and as of 1 p.m. on June 14, 111 general surgery cases have been sent to other hospitals.

Temporary general surgery diversion began at 5 p.m. on April 29 due to a shortage of clinical assistants who support the general surgery program, and a number of other factors.

AHS said during the diversion, 233 general surgery cases (both urgent and scheduled) were completed at Red Deer hospital, and an additional four surgery cases were scheduled for Tuesday, in addition to any emergency cases that should arise where transferring the patient would be unsafe.
