A man accused of assaulting a Red Deer policeman, leaving the officer on the ground suffering from serious injuries, has been apprehended.

Rad Rondeau, 42, was arrested Monday without incident and is in police custody, say Red Deer RCMP.

On June 4 at 3:26 a.m., police responded to a business on 50th Avenue, where there was a complaint of a trespasser.

An officer located a man, believed to be the suspect, and engaged in conversation with him.

During the interaction, the man allegedly assaulted the officer, knocking him unconscious. The policeman was bleeding from his head and was left on the ground. The suspect then fled.

Someone observed the incident and provided first aid assistance to the officer, who was taken to hospital. He has since been released.

Rondeau is charged with aggravated assault, robbery and obstruction. Prior to the incident, he was wanted on unrelated arrest warrants.
