Suspect arrested and Manitoba school placed on lockdown during basketball game

VITA, Man. — Police in Manitoba say a high school was locked down during a basketball game while officers tracked down a suspect accused of making threats on social media.

RCMP say in a news release that officers responded to a report on Friday evening that a former student had posted violent threats towards the Shevchenko School in Vita, Man.

They immediately placed the school on lockdown, and over the next two hours followed up on tips as they searched for the suspect.

Police say he — and a weapon — were eventually located with the assistance of dogs, although they did not disclose what the weapon was or where he was found.

They say the 19-year-old from the Rural Municipality of Stuartburn faces charges that include possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, uttering threats and possession of a firearm or prohibited weapon when knowing it’s unauthorized.

He remains in custody and police say they’re still investigating.
