A Red Deer man is facing arson and theft charges in connection with a blaze that did extensive damage at the north-side Canadian Tire store in April.

On April 5 about 8:40 pm, RCMP were called to assist Red Deer Emergency Services with the investigation of a fire at the store at 67th Street and Gaetz Avenue.

A Canadian Tire spokesperson said the store is expected to reopen later this summer.

Investigators said it appeared the fire likely started inside the store. Video surveillance footage helped identify an individual who may have information regarding the fire.

Police released surveillance images and requested the public’s help in locating a suspect.

On May 15, 2023, Red Deer RCMP General Investigative Section (GIS) arrested a suspect and charged him with arson and theft under $5,000.

Scott Sumyk, 43, of Red Deer, remains in custody and is next due in Red Deer’s Alberta Court of Justice on May 30.

Red Deer RCMP voiced their appreciation to the public for their assistance and co-operation during this investigation.
