Suspect in Red Deer, Alix ATM thefts facing numerous charges

A suspect accused of ATM thefts in Red Deer and Alix is facing numerous charges after being arrested in Wetaskiwin.

RCMP said they received reports on April 9 of two break and enters and thefts of ATMs in Red Deer and Alix. Extensive damage was done at both locations.

Wetaskiwin RCMP’s Crime Reduction Unit got involved and identified a suspect. Last Thursday, the crime reduction unit, aided by Police Dog Services, RCMP Air Services, the RCMP Emergency Response Team and members of Stettler and Bashaw Detachments, located and arrested a suspect in Wetaskiwin.

When arrested, it is alleged the suspect had a stolen truck. After a search, police seized more than 300 grams of fentanyl, a small amount of methamphetamine, a stolen licence plate, stolen identification documents and a prohibited firearm with a prohibited magazine.

A 26-year-old Wetaskiwin man has been charged with five counts of possession of a firearm contrary to a court order, two counts each of break and enter with intent to commit a crime, theft over $5,000 and mischief over $5,000, as well as single counts of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, possession of drugs, possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking, possession of a prohibited firearm with ammunition, possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, possession of a prohibited firearm knowing it was unauthorized.

The suspect remains in custody and is due in Red Deer’s Court of Justice on Friday.

“This investigation demonstrates the close correlation between property crime, drugs, and weapons,” says Wetaskiwin RCMP Staff Sgt Dean Grunow Wetaskiwin RCMP.

Grunow said the suspect is a repeat offender and that “focusing our policing efforts on offenders such as this, has the most effect on reducing crime in the communities we serve.”
