Two men who are alleged to have beaten a taxi driver to get out of paying for their ride are being sought by local police.

Red Deer RCMP said the two, who could have the first names Mike and Jay, fled on foot on Northey Avenue after beating the driver on April 10.

At about 8:40 p.m., police were called to the scene in north Red Deer. It is alleged that the two males, believed to be in their late teens or early 20s, took a taxi and then refused to pay once they reached their destination.

When the cab driver attempted to stop them, the two men punched him and kicked him in the stomach.

The suspects were last seen heading south on Northey Avenue on foot.

Police vehicles and dog services patrolled the area but the suspects were not located.

The taxi driver was taken to hospital and later released. He is expected to recover from his injuries.

Police described one suspect, who could be named Jay, as about 1.65 to 1.75 metres tall (five foot five to five foot nine). He is Caucasian, about 18- to 21-years-old with dark curly hair and dark eyes. At the time of the incident, he was wearing a white hoodie and carrying a black backpack.

The second suspect, who police believe could be named Mike, is described as Caucasian, slightly taller than the other suspect and is about 20 to 24-years-old. He has very short dark hair and was wearing a grey hoodie at the time of the incident.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Red Deer RCMP at 403-343-5575. Or if you wish to remain anonymous call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or report it online at
