Drop-in Pre-school Storytime is offered from 10 to 10:45 a.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays, and from 2 to 2:45 p.m. on Wednesdays at Red Deer Public Library Downtown Branch in the children’s department. Two Singles dances will be held in December. On Saturday, Dec. 12, Randy Hillman performs at Penhold Hall. Doors open at 8 p.m. Music begins at 8:30 p.m. On Dec. 26, Boxing Day, Randy performs again at Penhold Hall, same time. Cost is $10 for both dates. First Thursdays in the Snell offer free chamber music concerts from 12:15 to 1 p.m. at Red Deer Public Library Downtown Branch in the Snell Auditorium on the first Thursday of each month. Golden West Drop-in (Spruce View) welcomes old and new members to the following activities: monthly meeting followed by birthday cake, ice cream, coffee and tea on the first Thursday of the month at 2 p.m.; morning coffee — every morning from 6:30 to 9 a.m.; bridge at 1 p.m., and carpet bowling at 2 p.m. — on Tuesdays; pool and games on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. The facility is available for group meetings. Red Deer Symphony Orchestra presents A Baroque Christmas on Dec. 5, 8 p.m. at Gaetz Memorial United Church. Guest artists will be Voicescapes. Enjoy works of J.S. Search For Light meet the artist — Janice Williams — on Dec. 4 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Snell Auditorium at the downtown library. Using the landscape and quality of light, the artist works from an emotional reaction to light versus shadow. As we naturally gravitate towards light, the shadows provide a foreboding while the light provides contrast with renewal, life and joy. A Christmas Festival, presented by Canadian University College and Parkview Adventist Academy, will be held on Dec. 4, 7:30 p.m. and again on Dec. 5 at 4:30 p.m. at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Lacombe. No admission; an offering will be taken.

Charity CheckStopis planned by the Red Deer City RCMP for Dec. 5 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Taylor Drive just north of 32 Street. Members of the city RCMP and volunteers from MADD, the Christmas Bureau, the Red Deer Food Bank and many others will be collecting cash donations, non-perishable food items, new unwrapped toys and new mitts, scarves and hats.

Stepping up for the kids, Red Deer Firefighters children’s charity, will be held on Dec. 5 from noon to 5 p.m. at Bower Place Mall. Businesses and individuals are invited to pledge money for every flight of stairs climbed on a stair climber by the Red Deer Firefighters. Book release party for Ten Silver Coins: The Drylings of Acchora, an adventure novel for young adults, will take place on Dec. 3 at Second Cup in Southpointe Common from 6:30 to 9 p.m. $1 from the sale of each book will go to help refugee children.

Medicine River Wildlife Centre 2010 calendars will be available for sale at Dentoom’s Greenhouses on Dec. 5 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Purchase a calendar and have your photo taken with Otis the great horned owl for this day only.
