Sylvan Lake youth honoured

Sylvan Lake recognized community contributions of local youth at the 2013 Leaders of Tomorrow Awards banquet held last week.Four youth and one youth group received awards to celebrate their commitment to volunteering, sports teams, school activities, community involvement and leadership.

Sylvan Lake recognized community contributions of local youth at the 2013 Leaders of Tomorrow Awards banquet held last week.

Four youth and one youth group received awards to celebrate their commitment to volunteering, sports teams, school activities, community involvement and leadership.

This year, there were 85 award nominees.

Winners included:

• Six-to-10-year-old category: Rylee Resendes, 10, helps coach soccer, volunteers at the Sylvan Lake Food Bank, and raises money and awareness for Touch Ministries mission in Uganda.

• 11-to-13-year-old category: Hanna Sigfusson, 11, volunteers with Rotary, the Christmas Seniors Lunch, Breakfast with Santa, Canada Day celebrations, and has collected coins along the Santa Claus Parade route on behalf of the Sylvan Lake Food Bank.

• 14-to-18-year-old category: Marcus Ornella, 16, helps coach a boys hockey team, assists with the floor hockey program at the Youth Centre, and at many town events, including Breakfast with Santa and 1913 Days. He has volunteered with the Terry Fox Run and helped prepare and serve food to people in need at Sacred Heart Church.
