You can make a splash while celebrating Earth Hour on Saturday, March 24.

Red Deer residents can not only turn off all unnecessary lights to reduce electricity consumption between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. — they can participate in an Earth Hour Swim.

“Make a splash with global impact,” say event organizers of the toonie-per-person swim at the G.H. Dawe and Collicutt Centres. The 8 to 10 p.m. pool events will be held with all non-essential lights turned off to create a fun atmosphere while conserving energy and raising awareness of climate change in a safe, recreational environment.

Earth Hour started in Australia in 2007 when 2.2 million electricity consumers switched off their lights to raise awareness about climate change. It has since turned into a global movement.
