Teen boy killed in Canada Day collision in Red Deer

A teenaged boy was killed and two members of his family were injured in a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Taylor Drive and Kerry Wood Drive in Red Deer late Thursday evening.

A teenaged boy was killed and two members of his family were injured in a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Taylor Drive and Kerry Wood Drive in Red Deer late Thursday evening.

Police say a heavy-duty pickup truck travelling north on Taylor Drive struck the passenger side of a small, southbound car as its driver, a 20-year-old woman, was making a left turn onto Kerry Wood Drive at about 10:55 p.m.

A 13-year-old male passenger in the car died at the scene.

A second passenger in the car, an 18-year-old male, was airlifted by STARS to Calgary Foothills Hospital, where he is in stable condition. The female driver was taken to Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre with soft tissue injuries and was held overnight for observation, city RCMP Const. Julie Letal said today.

The pickup driver, a 32-year-old Red Deer man, was arrested at the scene and is being held in custody pending a bail hearing in Red Deer provincial court Friday afternoon.

Names of the three people in the smaller vehicle are not being released at the request of the family, said Letal.

Thursday’s crash comes only one week after a fatal collision on June 24, in which motorcycle rider Christopher Ian Smith was killed in a collision with a pickup truck at the intersection of 32nd Street and 47th Street.

RCMP continue to investigate both collisions with assistance from Red Deer RCMP Traffic Collision Reconstruction and RCMP Traffic Services Criminal Collision Investigation Team.

Anyone with information regarding either collision is asked to contact Red Deer City RCMP at 403-343-5575.
