Sylvan Lake RCMP have laid criminal charges against a 17-year-old girl in connection with a Sylvan Lake area crash that killed two teens last October.

Following a lengthy investigation, Mounties charged the driver of a car that collided with a small SUV at the intersection of Hwy 11 and Range Road 12 three km southeast of Sylvan Lake on Oct. 30.

Police say the southbound car on Range Road 12 had entered Hwy 11 when it was hit by the SUV westbound on Hwy 11. It collided with the driver’s side of the car. The crash occurred about 9:20 p.m.

Two 16-year-old boys riding in the car were killed and another female passenger was seriously injured. Five young people were in the car.

A 64-year-old woman was behind the wheel of the SUV.

The teenaged driver has been charged with two counts of dangerous driving causing death and one count of dangerous driving causing bodily harm.

The accused, who can’t be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, will make her first court appearance in Red Deer provincial court on May 7 at 9:30 a.m.
