A 16-year-old is dead after the SUV he was driving collided with a flatbed truck.

Rocky Mountain House RCMP responded around 8:30 a.m. Thursday to the collision on Arbutus Road. An SUV that was travelling northbound collided with a southbound flatbed truck.

The teen was a Grade 11 student at West Central High School in Rocky Mountain House.

“This is very sad news for our entire school community. I know our school and community will support and help each other as we grieve together,” said principal Nathan Moore.

The Wild Rose School Division has setup a crisis management team at the school where students can support each other throughout the day, and have access to family wellness workers.

The two occupants of the flatbed truck suffered from minor, non life-threatening injuries.

Rocky Mountain House RCMP Const. Courtney Tipton said the duo wasn’t taken to the hospital.

Traffic was re-routed around the collision scene for a few hours in the morning.

Tipton said police are investigating but poor visibility and weather are considered contributing factors.

The deceased’s name has not been released.
