Karen Kirk, Vickie Wyering and Laurissa Schneider, hang on to their boat as they try to stay afloat for one minuet during a Skills Canada Cardboard Boat Race at the G.H. Dawe Recreation Centre Pool on Tuesday.

The St. Augustine High School students from Ponoka along with their teammate Kaitlin Lomas competed along with about 120 other students from across Central Alberta in the first competition of its kind in Central Alberta.

Armed only with some tape, two small flotation devices and some cardboard the middle school and high school students built their boats and competed in two events — a 25-metre race across the pool and a load-carrying event where three members of the team were required to stay afloat for one minute.
