Customers were left without service around 10 a.m. on Thursday when a construction company doing work unrelated to Telus severed an underground fibre optic cable outside Red Deer near the 67t Street overpass on Hwy 11. Telus officials said the damage was extensive.

By 9 p.m. on Thursday, Telus had restored landline phone and Internet service to about 8,600 customers throughout the areas of Eckville, Leslieville, Nordegg, Rocky Mountain House and Sunchild O’Chiese.

Customers affected were unable to make or receive local or long distance calls or call 911. Wireless service in the area was also affected.
