The number of surgeries diverted from Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre surpassed 100 as of Monday, according to Alberta Health Services.

Temporary surgery diversion began a little over five weeks ago.

AHS said as of 10 a.m. on June 6, a total of 103 general surgery cases have been diverted to other hospitals, but Red Deer hospital continues to support emergency cases that cannot be transferred, as well as patients with scheduled procedures.

Temporary general surgery diversion began at 5 p.m. on April 29 due to a shortage of clinical assistants who support the general surgery program, and a number of other factors.

During the diversion, 180 general surgery cases (both urgent and scheduled) have been completed at the hospital.
