Jeweller Terry Balgobin says sitting on city council is an extension of his community service.

Balgobin announced on Thursday his intentions to run for Red Deer city council in the Oct. 21 municipal election.

Balgobin said he is committed to enhancing Red Deer as a family-focused community, using municipal resources responsibly and prudently and creating a strong business environment that promotes solid family values.

Balgobin says there’s a lot of red tape at City Hall that has made it difficult for new businesses and existing businesses to thrive.

He would like to cut some of the tape to make it easier for new businesses to set up and help the community grow.

Balgobin is concerned about the city’s debt, crime, public transportation and infrastructure needs.

Balgobin said the city needs more direction in spending money and managing its resources. He said he can make a difference because of his strong business sense.

“I am committed,” said Balgobin.

“I have been in business for a long time. I have a young family. I want to see the city strong and vibrant.

“It’s been good to me. I want it to be good for the future and for my children and to my community.”

He earned a City of Red Deer Heritage Preservation Award in 2011 for the restoration of the Greene Block, on the corner of Gaetz and Ross Street.

Balgobin, owner of Artistry in Gold Design Studio Ltd., has lived in Red Deer for more than 30 years.

He is a father of two, and is active in business and community organizations, including Parkland Community Living and Supports Society (CLASS), Habitat for Humanity, Red Deer East Rotary Club and the Red Deer Leads Executive Association.

Newcomers Dawna Morey, Victor Mobley, Jonathan Wieler, Janella Spearing, Ken Johnston, David Helm, Serge Gingras, Tanya Handley, Troy Wavrecan, Darren Young, Lawrence Lee, Calvin Goulet-Jones, Bob Bevins and Matt Chapin are also in the running. Incumbents Paul Harris, Dianne Wyntjes, Lynne Mulder and Buck Buchanan are seeking another term.

Councillors Cindy Jefferies and Tara Veer, William Horn and Chad Mason are vying for mayor.
