A suspected thief tried to make a getaway in a garbage truck before being nabbed by RCMP near Innisfail early Monday.

Airdrie RCMP responded to a break-in call at a business in the community about 1:30 a.m. on Monday. Police allege a man and woman broke into a business and took keys for two vehicles parked outside, one of them a garbage truck.

When police arrived, the suspects fled north on Highway 2 in the garbage truck and another vehicle. The garbage truck was abandoned near Crossfield and both suspects continued heading north in the other vehicle.

Near Innisfail, officers laid a spike belt and were able to stop the vehicle and take both suspects into custody.

A 27-year-old Red Deer man and 32-year-old Red Deer woman have each been charged with break and enter, mischief over $5,000, theft under $5,000, two counts of theft of a motor vehicle and flight from police. The man is also facing a charge of failing to comply with release conditions and the woman has an additional charge of possession of break-in instruments.

Both remain in custody and are due in Airdrie provincial court on Thursday.
