The third annual Red Deer Ribfest, which was scheduled for this weekend, is no longer happening.

A post was published on Ribfest’s Facebook page this week stating the event had been cancelled.

The event was scheduled to take place Friday to Sunday at Gary W. Harris Celebration Plaza in downtown Red Deer.

“We promise 2020 will be the best Red Deer Ribfest yet,” the post said.

Red Deerians “deserve the best and this is what we’ve been building in your town for the past three years.

“It is our long-term goal to turn the original Red Deer Ribfest into an amazing annual tradition that the entire community, kids and families will look forward to every year.”

Meat lovers won’t have to wait too long to get their fill, as the first-ever Shelter Ribfest, in support of the Central Alberta Women’s Emergency Shelter, will happen at the Gary W. Harris Celebration Plaza from Sept. 13 to 15.

Five rib teams from across Canada and the U.S. will serve up their barbecue smoked ribs at the event.

On-site activities will include live entertainment, a children’s play area and additional food options, including fresh-cut fries, mini doughnuts and beer.

Admission for the Shelter Ribfest is free, but a $2 donation at the gate would be appreciated, say organizers.

All proceeds will support the women’s emergency shelter.
