A head-on crash on a highway in northern Alberta has left three people dead.

Mounties in Lac La Biche say they were alerted on Thursday to a crash involving a sport utility vehicle and a pickup truck pulling a travel trailer.

The man and the woman in the SUV were declared dead at the crash site northeast of Edmonton.

Crews tried to save the lives of the two people in the pickup, but one of them, a woman from High Prairie, died on scene.

The man in the truck, from Glendon, Alta., was pulled from the wreck using the Jaws of Life and taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The investigation continues, with police looking for witnesses and dash cam footage.
