A 48-year-old Cremona-area man is in police custody after a tow-truck driver was struck by a motorist, who later left the scene by hitchhiking.
Didsbury RCMP were called to a collision on Hwy 22 south of Cremona just before 4 p.m. Thursday, after a tow-truck driver, who was out of his vehicle assisting a stranded motorist, was struck by a southbound Volkswagen Jetta and thrown into the ditch.
Before the seriously injured tow-truck driver could be rushed to Calgary Foothills Hospital, where he is now in stable condition, the driver of the Jetta left the scene.
Several people who stopped to help the injured tow-truck driver saw the suspect stop a passing vehicle and hitch a ride into Cremona.
Police report a 48-year-old male was later taken into custody and charges are pending.
A spring storm hit the region on Thursday, but Didsbury RCMP say weather conditions were no longer a factor at the time the tow-truck driver was struck.
Police wish to question the motorist who transported the suspect from the collision scene into Cremona. That driver should call 403-335-3382.
