Fire officials say a fire at Toys “R” Us on Wednesday afternoon was deliberately set.

Red Deer fire prevention officer Barry Wulff said investigation into the arson was turned over to the RCMP.

Shoppers and staff at the store were evacuated, while the rest of Bower Place shopping centre remained open.

Wulff said firefighters were called at about 3:45 p.m. and contained the fire to where it was started on the main floor of the store.

“The smoke travelled throughout the store and the duct work,” Wulf said.

He said any more information on the suspicious fire would have to come from the RCMP.

RCMP were unavailable for comment.
