A candlelight vigil for Transgender Day of Remembrance will be held in City Hall Park on Nov. 20.

Presented by Red Deer Queer Community Association, the vigil will feature guest speakers and will run from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

Candles will be provided to those who attend, and people are asked to dress for the weather which is expected to drop below 0 C with light snow.

Transgender Day of Remembrance is an annual international event to remember the lives lost to acts of transphobia, and to draw attention to the continued violence that transgender and gender non-conforming people endure.

The first Transgender Day of Remembrance took place on Nov. 20, 1999, to honour Rita Hester, who was murdered inAllston, Mass.

Red Deer Queer Community Association strives to make Red Deer and surrounding area a welcoming and inclusive space for gender and sexual minorities in central Alberta, and works to empower 2SLGBTQIA+ youth and adults through community-building and education initiatives.
