RCMP and others inspect the damage to a track excavator that fell off the back of a transport truck north of Red Deer on Tuesday morning. The excavator made contact with the CN Rail bridge over highway 2A and tumbled into the southbound ditch.

A truck towing a track hoe on Hwy 2A near Blackfalds lost its load Tuesday morning after striking a train trestle.

Const. Jeffrey Czarnecki of Red Deer Rural RCMP said police were called shortly after 10 a.m. after the track hoe struck an overhead warning signal for traffic lights on Hwy 597. As the truck continued travelling southbound on Hwy 2A, the hoe then hit the train bridge about five km north of Red Deer.

Czarnecki said there were no injuries or other vehicles involved even though the track hoe was knocked off the trailer.

Both the bridge and track hoe were damaged and hydraulic oil spilled from the hoe.

Traffic was reduced to one lane for the cleanup for a few hours.

The RCMP’s commercial vehicle unit is investigating.

Warren Chandler, a spokesperson with CN Rail, said engineers were checking on the damage and the integrity of the bridge.

“We’ve got some officials on the scene assessing the damage and any possible repairs that are required,” Chandler said.
