GUNN — A transport truck has dumped part of its load of diluted hydrochloric acid after rolling off a highway in a remote area west of Edmonton.
RCMP say an Alberta Environment hazardous goods inspector says the spill poses a low risk to the public and an evacuation of the area isn’t necessary.
Police say fire crews and Alberta Environment staff are working to contain the spill and a vapour cloud from the acid is visible.
It is not clear how much of the acid spilled after the truck went off Highway 43 around 3:00 a.m. a few kilometres east of Lac St. Anne.
Highway traffic is being rerouted and motorists are being told to avoid the area.
Hydrochloric acid is corrosive to the eyes, skin and mucous membranes.
“Responders are on-site monitoring the remediation and response activities,” Jamie Hanlon, an Alberta Environment spokesmen, said Tuesday.
“Offloading of the remaining product is ongoing at this time.”
