A pair of new physicians are now practising in Central Alberta.

On Thursday Alberta Health Services announced Dr. Jude Unuafe, a general practice physician, is working from the Rimbey Care Centre and from the Rimbey Medical Clinic.

Additionally, Dr. Colton Lewis, a new general practice physician, is working at the Innisfail Health Centre, as well as the Olds Hospital and Care Centre, Peaks to Prairies Primary Care Network, and Wildrose Medical Health Clinic in Olds.

Lewis received his medical training at the University of Alberta, with additional rural family medicine and Family Practice Anesthesia training through the University of Calgary.

His schooling included time in Hinton and Lethbridge. He has been a locum physician since graduating and has practiced across Alberta including Olds, Innisfail, Rocky Mountain House and Red Deer. He has also served as a locum physician in Inuvik and Whitehorse.

Lewis grew up in rural Alberta, AHS noted.

“When you are part of a rural community no two days are the same, but you make an impact for your community regardless,” said Lewis.

“I look forward to developing long lasting relationships in the community and for my family being given the opportunity to grow as well.”

Nathan Cooper, MLA for Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills, said “Lewis’ skills in family medicine and anesthesia, and his passion for rural Alberta, will make him a tremendous asset” to the area.

“We are pleased to welcome Dr. Lewis to Alberta’s dynamic Central Corridor.”

Unuafe received his medical training in Nigeria and previously practiced in Nigeria and South Africa.

Jason Nixon, MLA for Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre, said the arrival of a new general practice physician is “wonderful news.”

“Dr. Unuafe and his family are a welcome addition to the community and he is sure to be a great asset to Rimbey and the surrounding area,” said Nixon.

Alberta Health Services is continuing to recruit for physicians across Alberta to meet community needs. AHS has physician resource planners who are dedicated to identifying and pursuing international and domestic physician recruitment opportunities. The planners work with various community partners and organizations, such as local Health Advisory Councils, the Rural Health Professions Action Plan, and independent physician recruitment and retention committees.
