Two workers at Olymel’s pork processing facility in Red Deer have tested positive for COVID-19.
The company learned Thursday morning that an employee had tested positive for the virus. It’s suspected the case is linked to a social gathering away from the plant, but as a precaution, five co-workers have been sent for testing and are self-isolating.
“We are very transparent about what is going on,” said company spokesman Richard Vigneault, adding Olymel sent a letter to all 1,850 plant employees, along with advice about best practices from Alberta Health Services.
Thursday’s case follows an earlier one connected to the plant this week. There was no further spread, said Vigneault.
“The manager and his staff are very serious about this issue. The employees are too. I must emphasize that point.”
