The United Conservative Party has a majority hold in Alberta, except Edmonton, where the NDP is standing strong, according to a new poll.

Data from Janet Brown Opinion Research shows UCP maintains a lead over the governning New Democrats across the province.

UCP commands the support of 53 per cent of decided and leaning voters. The NDP is 19 points behind at 34 per cent. The Alberta Party is third at eight per cent, and the Liberals are at four per cent.

All other parties, including the Greens and the Freedom Conservatives, are at one per cent provincewide.

Results in Calgary are similar to the provincial average, with the UCP holding a 21-point lead over the NDP – 53 per cent versus 32 per cent.

The NDP has a seven-point lead over the UCP in Edmonton – 46 per cent versus 39 per cent.

The UCP leads the NDP by 43 points in the rest of the province, with 66 per cent versus 23 per cent.

“This data is very consistent with every poll I have conducted in the last 18 months,” said Janet Brown.

“The reason I think we are not seeing a big shift in voting intentions is because many Albertans are not yet actively engaged with this campaign, and those that are engaged are not hearing things that are changing their perspective.”

The poll survey began with an open-ended question about the single most important issues facing Alberta today. The most common top-of-mind issues mentioned include the economy (27 per cent), pipelines and the energy industry (20 per cent) and employment and jobs (17 per cent).

Survey questions were administered between March 25 and 30 to a sample of 900 Albertans, aged 18 and over. The margin of error for this sample of 900 people is plus or minus 3.3 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
