Damien Adcock, 15, front, of Ponoka Composite High School heads for the finish as Joshua Schweer, 14, of Spruce View School tries to get back on track during cardboard boat races in the G.H. Dawe Centre pool Thursday.

The races pitted 26 teams of junior and senior high school students from across Central Alberta against each other in boats they’d designed and built using only cardboard, string, duct tape and their imaginations.

Boats were tested for both speed and the number of team members they’d fit.

Spruce View ended up taking second place in the junior high category.

The second annual event was sponsored by Skills Canada Alberta to get the students to think about trade and technology careers.
