UPDATE: Hwy 2 conditions improving but expected to worsen later in day

Two semi trucks hit the ditches along Hwy 2 Thursday morning near Blackfalds, causing traffic delays for motorists.

Two semi trucks hit the ditches along Hwy 2 this morning near Blackfalds, causing traffic delays for motorists.

RCMP Const. Steve Molnar, with Innisfail Integrated Traffic Unit, said Ponoka officers spent about two hours dealing with the trucks that went off the highway near Blackfalds.

Poor winter driving conditions stretched south to Airdrie where two more transport trucks went off Hwy 2.

Molnar said he attended two vehicles that went off the highway in the Innisfail area.

“The roads are terrible but surprisingly people are staying on them,” Molnar said.

He said up until about 11 a.m., the highway was a “solid sheet of ice” from about Innisfail to Didsbury. By the early afternoon, the roads were more wet then slippery, but he expected conditions to deteriorate tonight.

“As soon as the sun goes away tonight, and it cools off, it’s going to go to ice again.”

Unfortunately, the icy roads didn’t stop some people from speeding on Thursday, said Molnar who knew of motorists driving at speeds of 130 to 150 km/h.
