No injuries were reported after a vehicle was driven through a bay door at a Red Deer car dealership.
Red Deer Emergency Services were called to the Wheaton Chevrolet dealership’s auto shop located at the intersection of Gaetz Avenue and 32 Street just before noon on Saturday.
“That part of the building (where the collision) occurred cannot be occupied until it’s signed off by an engineer. There was some structural damage,” said Jon Evans, RDES assistant deputy chief.
Red Deer RCMP responded to the scene as well.
“We received a report of a vehicle that drove through the shop doors of Wheaton Chevrolet and we’re currently investigating,” said Alberta RCMP Cpl. Troy Savinkoff.
Just after responding to the incident at the car dealership, RDES was called to a detached-garage fire in the city’s Michener Hill neighbourhood.
“That call came in at 12:51 (p.m.),” Evans explained.
“We had four trucks and approximately 20 firefighters. The fire extended into a neighbouring detached garage, but our crews were able to knock down the fire and minimize extension into that second garage.”
The City of Red Deer asked residents to stay clear of the area around the 51 Street and 42 Avenue intersection if possible in a tweet at 1:26 p.m. The tweet noted there would be a “small road closure in the area for a short time.”
No injuries were reported in this incident either.
The garage where the fire began is a total loss, while the second garage experienced minor damage, Evans noted.
“(Firefighters) did a good job to knock down that fire and minimize damage to the structure. Contents were salvaged from that one,” he said.
The cause has yet to be determined, but a fire investigator arrived on scene about two hours after the blaze was first called in.
