Red Deer officials recorded a vehicle going three times the legal speed limit in a playground zone.

The vehicle was travelling at 101 km/hr in a 30 km/hr zone on 57th Avenue, near Watson Street, in West Park on Thursday.

“There is absolutely no need or acceptable reason to be travelling at that speed in a residential area, let alone in a posted playground zone,” says Jonathon Matula, a community peace officer with the city.

“There are plenty of kids and families who are using our playgrounds and parks, and this reckless behaviour could easily have resulted in serious injury or death.”

Drivers are reminded playground zones are in effect in Red Deer from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., seven days a week.

The speed limit in all residential neighbourhoods is 50 km/hr, unless otherwise posted.
