A car smashed through a Red Deer business’ front window while fleeing police Friday afternoon.
Red Deer RCMP tried to pull over a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot on Gaetz Avenue near Bennet Street.
The suspect put the car into drive, collided with the police vehicle and then drove into the front window of the Dollar Tree.
The vehicle then fled, striking several more vehicles.
Jason Dillingham, who works at Allstate Insurance, just a couple doors down, said the whole incident was surreal.
“I was sitting in my office, and I heard a crash and tires squealing,” Dillingham said.
“As an insurance guy, I thought I’d pop out and take a look. When I got to the window the guy was driving on the sidewalk and backed into a little black truck. Then he pulled forward again, crashed through the window, backed into the post, came back out and took out a couple more vehicles,” he said.
Dillingham said a police officer has his weapon “right on” the driver the entire time.
“The passenger had her head down avoiding the whole scenario and the driver had fear on his face when he was getting away,” he said.
The whole incident happened quickly, but it felt like it was in slow motion, Dillingham added.
“You sit there and you’re kind of taken aback. The police officer asked what the make or model of the vehicle was, but I could just say it’s a white truck … because you don’t pick that stuff up in the moment,” he said.
Police say they believe no one was injured in the incident.
The RCMP’s investigation is ongoing.
