Ten Red Deer veterans were honoured for their service with colourful quilts recently.

The quilts were provided by Quilts of Valour-Canada, an organization formed in 2006 in Edmonton, whose mission is to ensure veterans and injured Canadian Forces members are recognized for their service and commitment to their country.

In a ceremony at Red Deer’s Extendicare facility this past Saturday, members of the Commandos Canada Motorcycle Club, whose members are veterans of or serving members of Canada’s Armed Forces, helped present the quilts to a number of veterans.

The event came about because of the efforts of a local 10-year-old girl, Elizabella Mackenzie who questioned why veterans were only honoured one day a year on Remembrance Day. She contacted Veterans Affairs Canada and received 560 blank Postcards of Peace.

Each postcard was filled out by students and sent to veterans across Canada and overseas.

Ten of the postcards ended up at Extendicare in Red Deer, where the girl’s grandmother, Sherryl Johnstone, has been a volunteer for many years. The two were together at the ceremony doing their part to honour the veterans.
