Drivers are responsible for collecting payment for the deliveries and returning to the office. Delivery drivers will be reimbursed for mileage and be given directions for the routes. • Berachah Place — a drop in centre for Red Deer’s homeless, is looking to extend their hours by increasing their volunteer staff who help run the centre. • Bethany Care Society — Collegeside requires outing assistants. Volunteers are needed to help seniors on and off the bus, visit with them during the drive and assist with wheelchairs during the outings. • Canadian Blood Services is looking for Youth Volunteers aged 17 to 24 years who are attending high school or college. • Central Alberta Refugee Effort (C.A.R.E.) is seeking volunteers for a variety of positions, including:

Immigrant youth volunteer — immigrant youth are eager to learn and appreciate your assistance. Time commitment is only one hour per week and is quite flexible.

Volunteer friend — to spend two hours a week visiting with immigrants and refugees to help them learn more about Canadian culture and customs and in doing so, help them practice conversational English and improve their language skills.

Special event volunteer assists with special events, manning displays, fundraising and poster distribution.

• Central Alberta Women’s Emergency Shelter requires volunteers for the following positions:

Weekend cook — to plan and prepare balanced weekend suppers for shelter clients.

Movers — to assist clients moving from the shelter into their new homes. If you have access to a truck and/or trailer and a few hours to spare each month, you can help victims of domestic violence transition into a new life. Compensation for your mileage is in the form of a tax receipt and lifting may be required.

• Citizens on Patrol — the Red Deer RCMP are interested in reviving this volunteer group that sees neighborhood patrols report on suspicious activity in our community. One four hour shift per month with training and support provided. Contact Constable Jody Young at 403-341-2077.

Handy man/maintenance — for small, casual jobs as they arise

• Michener Services is seeking the following volunteers:

Green house volunteer — love gardening? Come out, meet a new friend and work together to create our community garden for an hour per week. Pick a day or time Monday to Friday between 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. or Saturday and Sunday 1 to 4 p.m.

Palliative care volunteer — to provide support, friendship, and a caring ear through activities such as: helping to write letters, memoirs or scrapbook pictures, reading or playing music. Volunteers will have the opportunity to share life stories and journey with individuals who are dying.

Physiotherapy (water activities) — under the guidance of our physiotherapy team you can assist individuals in the water with movement, flexibility and fitness. This program runs Tuesday and Thursday 1 to 3:30 p.m.

• Red Deer Neighbourhood Watch is seeking volunteers for a variety of positions, including:

Block captain — be the volunteer for your block of 10 to 20 homes. Meet your neighbours, distribute crime prevention packages and talk about what’s happening in you neighbourhood! Time commitment is about four hours per year. You do not have to be home all the time. You do not let anyone in to your home. You can sign up for the RCMP News Release emails and will receive at least one newsletter a year.

Board member — fundraiser; attend ten meetings per year on the second Tuesday of each month, 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Majority of tasks are things you can do at home to organize our fundraiser events (most of our events happen in the month of MAY each year): Community barbecue — as part of Crime Prevention Week, two events where we participate with displays and receive honorariums, donation tins for the month of MAY each year, Home Show raffle booth, assist with organizing casino volunteers (January 2010).

• Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre is seeking volunteers for the following positions:

Moose cottage volunteers — A place for patients, visitors and staff to unwind with volunteers providing refreshments and support. Four hour afternoon shifts available daily.

Pastoral care volunteers — porters and accompanies patients to Chapel services or sing-a-longs. Two hour shifts available weekday afternoons.

Acute care recreation assistant — working directly with elderly acute care patients awaiting placement to continuing care, volunteers will help enhance their quality of life by assisting them to participate in various activities/programs. Time commitment is two to three hours once per week; morning or afternoon, Monday to Friday.

Greeter — greet, provide information and direction, and possibly accompany incoming patients and visitors to the department/unit that they are seeking.

Renal dialysis volunteer assistant — assist staff in this clinical area with various duties, offer companionship to patients and families, portering discharge patients.

• Rural Victim Services Society is seeking volunteers who will offer 24-hour crisis assistance to victims of crime and other tragic circumstances. Upon the request of the RCMP, specially selected and trained volunteers provide prompt on-scene crisis intervention and support to victims. • Special Olympics Red Deer is seeking volunteers for the following positions:

Affiliate committee secretary — the incumbent is a voting member of the management committee whose duties include taking minutes at committee meetings (approximately five times a year) and doing some correspondence.

Promotions chairperson — the incumbent is a voting member of the Affiliate Committee, responsible for marketing and promoting Special Olympics in Red Deer. Approximately five meetings per year plus other work as required from home or office. First Aid responders — attend events of all kinds in local communities to provide First Aid response to participants and spectators of various events. These can include: paintball tournaments, fundraising walks/runs, trade shows, soccer tournaments, ice skating events, and many others.

Therapy dog volunteers — visit those in need of some companionship in locations such as hospitals, hospices, care homes, as well as group homes. Must have veterinarian record of up to date vaccinations and statement of general animal health.
