Walk A Mile in Her Shoes event is going virtual

There is an old saying: You can’t really understand another person’s experience until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes.

Red Deer’s Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event is going virtual this year.

The event has been a pledge-based fundraising and public awareness campaign featuring men who walk one mile in women’s high-heeled shoes.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Women’s Outreach Centre will hold a virtual event. This means participants will be able to complete their one mile, in heels, anywhere.

The centre asks supporters to choose any day between Friday and May 21 to get their walk in, and then challenge five friends to do the same thing.

Just as walking in high heels may, at times, be difficult and uncomfortable, so can talking about sexual violence, the agency states.

Each participant is challenged to set a suggested minimum goal of $500.

Money raised will help the outreach centre to deliver programs that provide many services to women, men and children.

“Our goal is to ensure anyone living in or leaving an abusive relationship has access to someone who can respond to their crisis and support them,” says the agency.
