The Red Deer Family Doctors organization is inviting businesses, families and individuals to get active with a virtual trek through the Hawaiian Islands.

Participants are encouraged to tackle a four-month fitness challenge by signing up at the Red Deer Primary Care Network's website — www.reddeerpcn.com.

The trek held a kickoff celebration at Parson's Clinic on Monday afternoon, followed by a short walk and some hot chocolate.

"It's going to be a four-month trek — 1,600,000 steps to get around the islands," said Dr. Peter Bouch, a Primary Care Network spokesperson. "We've done a few of these before, and I think this is the longest so far."

There is no cost for joining the trek. The deadline for submissions is February 20, 2010.
