Firefighters were called to battle a blaze at an abandoned hotel in Bowden shortly after the clock struck midnight to signal the new year.

Olds RCMP received a report of a fire at the Bowden Hotel in the early hours of Saturday morning. Upon arrival, the building was completely engulfed in flames.

Firefighters “worked diligently to extinguish the fire,” said RCMP.

The Olds Fire Department was called for a mutual-aid assist in the early hours of New Year’s Day, according to a Facebook post.

“We got to work with our neighbouring communities of Bowden and Innisfail,” the Facebook post said.

The scene has been secured and RCMP are working with fire investigators to determine a possible cause.

It is not believed that anyone was inside as this hotel has been abandoned for some time.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact Olds RCMP at 403-556-3324 or their local police. To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), online at www.P3Tips.com or by using the “P3 Tips” app available through the Apple App or Google Play Store.
