A severe thunderstorm accompanied by heavy winds and rain has descended on the Red Deer area.

Environment Canada has issued an alert to the potential development of severe thunderstorms with large hail and damaging winds.

Environment Canada advises people to monitor weather conditions, and if threatening weather approaches take immediate safety precautions.
