Wetaskiwin RCMP has arrested a 36-year-old man following a fatal collision last week.

This past Wednesday, at about 4 p.m., police were called to a collision on Highway 814 at Township Road 470, just north of Wetaskiwin.

Police say the investigation indicated an SUV travelling southbound on the highway was struck by a westbound pickup truck, causing the SUV to roll into the ditch.

The 62-year-old woman from New Norway, who was driving the SUV, died at the scene.

Witnesses told police they saw a male driver, and lone occupant of the pickup truck, fleeing the scene. Edmonton RCMP’s police dog services assisted in tracking the man – he was located a short distance away.

The 36-year-old man, of Devon, is facing a number of charges, including operating a motor vehicle while impaired causing death, dangerous operation of motor vehicle causing death, criminal negligence causing death, failure to stop after accident resulting in death and possession of stolen property over $5,000.

The man is in custody and scheduled to appear in court in Wetaskiwin on Sept. 23.
