Wetaskiwin RCMP received a complaint of a possible impaired driver travelling southbound on Highway 13 on Saturday at 4:55 p.m.

The driver was spotted driving in and out of the ditch.

Wetaskiwin RCMP, with the support of the Leduc detachment, located the vehicle and attempted to stop it. The vehicle fled and the RCMP initiated a pursuit.

The suspect vehicle drove toward the RCMP cars, which had to veer out of the way to avoid collisions.

The RCMP deployed a spike belt, and the suspect vehicle purposefully crashed into a parked police vehicle, pushing it into the ditch.

The male driver was arrested without further incident.

James Cridland, 57, faces eight criminal charges, including operating a conveyance while impaired, dangerous driving, failing to stop for a peace officer and assault with a weapon.

Cridland has been released and will appear later in Wetaskiwin provincial court.
